Machine to machine is a combination of several machines connected through a sorted network. However, it is not mandatory that there should be a connection between machines only; instead there could be electronic devices with a genuine communication feature. The installed devices can either have a wireless or wired network that can successfully establish a network. It can be said that Internet of Things is a next big thing in the technology market which have been introduced with the concept of M2M. Thus, M2M can be depicted as the foundation for Internet-of-things.

Inventory management, supply chain management, healthcare, traffic control, logistics, robotics and fleet management are few of the several applications that have been developed considering M2M as its base. Above all, IPv6 has played a vital role that brought a huge number of IP addresses which ultimately helped in the success of M2M technology and its derivative; IoT technology.

The Processing of M2M

In order to execute a task successfully, three or more machines have been communicating at a time. The communication rate was sufficient and thus, it was in the trend since last few years. M2M architecture had considered the concept of communication and integrated the sensors that can allow collecting pictures and other form of messages. This information then travels from one device to device remotely. M2M infrastructure actually came into existence in 70s within which the communication was referred as ‘telemetric communication’. The entire process involves the collecting of information through sensors which is then fed to the remote management center.

As per a few analysis reports, it can be identified that optimal utilization of the resources is possible. As an example, a wind power station has been integrated with M2M setup, so that each fan can monitor some crucial data like wind rpm, wind speed and rate of power generation per rotation. Simultaneously, it can also store all the important information about the neighboring fan. Here, M2M communication will allow the fans to communicate with each other so that they can monitor its neighboring fan’s health, scheduled maintenance, power-generating capacity and much more. Once, the entire data gets retrieved by the fan, it feed it to the remote monitoring center for analysis.

The functioning of M2M within above mentioned example; wind power fan can aid in tracking the due date of its maintenance or to track the possibility of its failure. Also, other fans will boost up the production by notifying various possibilities. The technical team will get aware of the possible faults that might occur and will also get an alert about the scheduled maintenance. Thus, preventive measures can be taken periodically so as to avoid power production fluctuation.

M2M Applications

Internet of Things - IoT

M2M applications have enveloped the market including various domains and industries such as logistics, healthcare, production, supply chain, robotics, operations and many more. Its applications are expanding each day because of the reason that IoT technology has become a need of the hour within all sectors. Most of the ruling companies of the marketplace are sending a huge amount for the implementation of IoT technology to enhance their productivity.

No doubt that wireless technology is the base of M2M architecture and IoT technology. Also, it might be helping to carry out calling and data tracking at a large extent. With its feature of easy transmission and tracking, most of the industries are following the trend. As mentioned above, energy management is one the biggest industry that is leveraging from IoT technology. M2M and IoT can help in developing smart power grids to deliver information such as detecting demand of industry and assisting in creating required decisions to be carried out.

Another biggest beneficiary of M2M communication network is auto insurance. Each automobile that is already insured owns the pre-installed sensors to carry out IoT processing. These sensors will help the automobiles to track the information such as driving activities of the customer, fuel consumption rate, status report of the auto parts and much more. All such information is fed to the remote management center. Further, this information is used for the analysis of behavior of a particular automobile performance so that future plans can be made by the insurance companies. This is how, Internet of Things gained a successful presence due to the concept evolved from M2M architecture.
